Attend a Drive-In Movie

This idea is one we’d call “an oldie but a goodie!” While the concept is nothing new, drive-in theaters make for the perfect social distancing date night. You won’t need to dish out $30 on popcorn and a fountain drink or stuff your pockets with candy contraband. South Bay Drive-In Theater screens movies daily, showing two movies at a time on each of its three screens. Movies are shown year-round so even when the world goes back to normal, you might just want to adopt this date night tradition.

Take a Hike with Your Hunny

For the outdoorsy couple, a hike with your hunny might be just what the Love Dr. ordered! Exploring new places with your date can be a fun and bonding experience. Physical activity releases serotonin, dopamine and endorphins, AKA the happy chemicals, that set the tone for a good mood. Hiking is a cheap date and much more memorable than dinner for two. Here are some of the top trails near Downtown San Diego:

  • Torrey Pines State Reserve Loop – 20 mins from K1
  • Batiquitos Lagoon Trail – 30 mins from K1
  • Blue Skye Ecological Reserve – 30 mins from K1
  • Iron Mountain Trail – 30 mins from K1
  • Potato Chip Rock – 1 hour from K1

While seasoned San Diegans might be familiar with these trails, others may find immense enjoyment out of venturing outside of their norm!

Explore Picturesque La Jolla Cove

La Jolla is an easy 20-minute drive from K1 and just so happens to be one of the top beach destinations in the world. This area is best explored by one of three ways, by kayak, by bike, or by snorkel! A kayaking cave tour through spectacular sea cliffs home to sea lions and leopard sharks is a date you won’t soon forget. More daring couples will love the La Jolla Shores Snorkel Tour through the reef. This tour teaches participants the fundamentals of snorkeling so first-timers are more than welcome. If your sea legs aren’t quite up to par, the Soledad Slide Bike Tour along San Diego’s famous coastline delivers stunning views making it one of the best ways to experience the jewel coast!

Give Beach Yoga a Try

Now more than ever, it’s important to find ways to keep your zen! Taking part in an outdoor yoga class together is fun and engaging quality time. Pacific, Santa Monica and Ocean Beach offer free, instructor-led classes at set times. Coronado hosts Beach Yoga with Mary from 8:30-9:30am on Tuesdays & Fridays as well as Yoga with Danelle on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am. As the saying goes, couples who yoga together stay together!

Opt for Takeout

Top of the day with a gourmet meal from any of the local businesses in the area. Below are the top dining spots walking distance from K1:

  • The Mission
  • Lincoln Park
  • Amplified Ale Works Kitchen + Beer Garden

Our Favorite Outdoor Activities near K1 in San Diego

Have you just moved into your first apartment in downtown San Diego? You may be looking around for things to do, but unsure where your adventures should take you. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite spots in downtown.

With this list you’ll be able to enjoy everything from a day out with the family to a night out on the town. Added bonus? These must-do San Diego downtown attractions are within walking distance of K1 or accessible via public transit, making them as easy to get to as they are to enjoy.

Petco Park

Always a big draw, San Diego’s own MLB park is within easy distance of K1. Take in a night game with the Padres during the season or enjoy any one of a number of events that Petco hosts during the off-season. Popular favorites include The Links, a nine-hole ballpark golf experience that takes place in December and Monster Jam in February.

The East Village

San Diego’s East Village has experienced a huge growth spurt in the last decade or so, inspired by the arrival of Petco Park to downtown San Diego. It’s become a hub for eating, drinking, and dancing the night away in downtown. Head over to the Hotel Solamar to enjoy their rooftop bar or enjoy some pasta and woodfire pizza at Bottega Americano. The options are endless in this fun downtown district.

The Gaslamp Quarter

Nestled in the East Village is San Diego’s historic district, the Gaslamp Quarter. Visitors love this part of downtown for its unique juxtaposition of modern and Victorian architecture, along with its array of galleries, boutiques, and nightclubs.

The New Children’s Museum

Want something to do with the kids or have family visiting from out of town? You might want to consider a trip over to the New Children’s Museum. This new type of museum for kids has a mission to “stimulate imagination, creativity and critical thinking in children and families through inventive and engaging experiences with contemporary art” along with an area designed just for toddlers and their caregivers.

Bayfront Park

Miles of walking paths and public art make a visit to Bayfront Park good for the heart and the soul. This grassy park is located right on the waterfront, making the views soothing and breezy on even a hot summer day. Stop by the Hilton San Diego Bayfront at the end of your stroll for a relaxing drink.

San Diego Zoo

Ready for a trolley? Hop on San Diego’s favorite public transit system to visit our world-famous zoo. Popular animals at the San Diego Zoo include mandrills, elephants, giant tortoises, and over 25 koalas in the zoo’s Australian Outback section.

The Embarcadero

San Diego’s maritime history is on vibrant display in the Embarcadero, located right along Big Bay in Downtown. Kids and adults alike can enjoy visits to historical ships in dock and maritime museums. You can even take a harbor tour on a boat or enjoy a spot of fishing at the working fishing harbor.

Living at K1 means quick and easy access to a whole world of fun and entertainment. These are just a few of the opportunities you have in downtown San Diego to enjoy yourselves. Have your own places in downtown San Diego that you’re enjoying? Let us know in the comments below

If you know where to look, San Diego can be “America’s Finest City” for both you and your furry best friend. While dogs aren’t allowed just anywhere, there are plenty of places in this city for you and your pooch to enjoy together. Whether you prefer a day at the beach, a fun brunch, or live entertainment, be sure to know all the top spots for dogs in San Diego.

Best Dog-Friendly Beaches

Spending time at the beach with your pup can be a delightful way to soak in the sun and get some exercise for both of you. However, not all beaches in the area allow pets. Check out these spots if you’re looking for dog-friendly beaches in and around San Diego:

  • The Original Dog Beach: This spot off of Point Loma Boulevard at the northern end of Ocean Beach is perhaps one of the most popular dog beaches in the country. Let your pup run free without a leash 24/7/365. Plus, you can hit the dog bathing station two blocks away.
  • Del Mar Dog Beach in Del Mar: Also known as North Beach, the city allows dogs to wander leash-free from the day after Labor Day until mid-June. You can find it off of Highway 101 between Via De La Valle and 29th.
  • Fiesta Island: This beach in Mission Bay features long stretches of sand and dunes for your off-leash dog.
  • North Beach Dog Run: Just next to the U.S. Naval Station entrance is North Beach Dog Run, a beach where dogs roam free year-round. You can also find a foot-washing station and free dog bags. Just be sure to keep Fido on a leash until you hit the sand.

Best Dog-Friendly Restaurants in San Diego

When you and your pooch get hungry, there’s no need to head straight home. According to Bring Fido, there are at least 540 dog-friendly restaurants in San Diego. Some of the top-rated restaurants that allow dogs include:

  • Lazy Dog: With locations across the San Diego area, Lazy Dog is one of the best spots to eat with your pooch. Pets are welcome on the patio and enjoy their own special menu.
  • The Patio on Lamont Street: California cuisine for you and homemade dog biscuits for your best friend.
  • Pier Cafe: Soak in beautiful ocean views while you and your pup dine in this beachfront restaurant.
  • Union Kitchen and Tap: Sip a craft beer and enjoy interesting dishes with your best friend.

Other Pet-Friendly Spots in San Diego

While a day at the beach and a bite to eat are fun options for your furry friend, they aren’t your only choices. You can hit up any of San Diego’s off-leash dog parks, including:

  • Nate’s Point Off-Leash Dog Park
  • Dusty Rhodes Off-Leash Dog Park
  • Capehart Dog Park
  • Mission Bay Dog Park
  • Grape Street Dog Park
  • Kearney Mesa Dog Park

Looking for something aside from a basic dog park? Check out the shops at Seaport Village, where shopkeepers encourage dogs to come in. You could also check out the art in the Spanish Village Arts Center, go out on the water together with at Downtown Boat Rentals, or even rent pup-friendly equipment through Aqua Adventures Kayaks & Paddleboards.

Events for Your San Diego Pets

San Diego is home to several annual events that keep the city lively throughout the year. Some such events not only allow pets but celebrate your pooch. Consider taking your dog to any of the following pet events throughout the year:

  • Hornblower Cruises Annual Pet Day on the Bay: Each May, this event welcomes pets and their owners to join together for cruises around San Diego.
  • Unleashed Surf Dog Competition: Whether your dog surfs or you just want to watch other pups ride the waves, this summer event is a must.

When you’re all done adventuring with your pup, make sure you return home to dog-friendly apartments in San Diego. Our properties offer pet-friendly policies and amenities to accommodate you and your best friend.
